[Narrator] If you think riding
00:03
in an airplane is exhausting,
00:07
To keep those metal tubes
00:08
from disintegrating in midair,
00:10
Boeing employees install some 60,000 rivets
00:16
It’s the kind of hard, repetitive work
00:18
that can injure your shoulders, back, and arms,
00:21
so Boeing brought in the robots.
00:25
This is the Fuselage Automated Upright Build,
00:28
also known as FAUB.
00:31
it’s been working on Boeing 777 assembly line,
00:34
helping bolt together sections of fuselage.
00:37
The robots start by drilling thousands of holes
00:40
where those panels meet.
00:42
Then they work in pairs
00:43
to install the rivets that will lock them together.
00:46
One arm fires the rivet,
00:47
while its friendo on the other side of the panel
00:50
holds the bucking bar that forces the rivet into place.
00:54
They use laser vision systems
00:56
to make sure they’re working in exactly the same spot.
01:00
Even better, these are free range robots.
01:03
They move around the assembly line
01:05
on autonomous guided vehicles.
01:07
After the human employees put the fuselage panels in place,
01:11
the robots waltz in and bolt everything together.
01:14
For Boeing, the benefits are clear,
01:16
faster, more efficient workers
01:18
that don’t demand healthcare,
01:19
and ultimately, the ability to build more planes
01:24
And you, dear flyer,
01:26
you can stop complaining already.
